TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES.
Sir, — The exccesses of some few States in the American Union have been used too long as a bogy to prevent a reasonable measure of divorce reform from being passed in England. In medio tutissimus, and because Nevada is too advanced is no reason why England should be behind every Protestant country in the world. It is to Holland and to the Scandinavian States rather than to America that English reformers look for their models. If, after the successful debate and vote of the House of Lords, the cup is now dashed from the lips of so many sufferers, it will indeed be a national tragedy. It is not generally appreciated that if the great numbers of both sexes now sterilized by separation were allowed freedom to marry, the results in population would in a very few generations compensate for all the losses in the war, while the happiness and general morality of the community would be greatly increased.
