Submarine Mines

The Times (8 september 1914)

TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES.

Sir, — Is it really beyond the capacity of our marine architects to devise some sort of steel trident or fork which could be projected into the water in front of the bows of a vessel to explode a contact mine before the prow actually touched it ? I understand that a surprisingly small interval of water forms an effective buffer against the shock.

Yours faithfully,

ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE.
