In the Sherlock Holmes stories

Captain Arthur Morstan was the father of Mary Morstan, the client of Sherlock Holmes in The Sign of Four. (SIGN, 133)

  • He was officer in an Indian regiment (SIGN, 226). In the year 1878, he was senior captain of his regiment (SIGN, 229). He was in charge of the convict guard in the Andaman Islands (SIGN, 242).
  • He disappeared upon the 3rd of December 1878 (SIGN, 239).
  • After some heated words with Thaddeus Sholto, Morstan had sprung out of his chair in a paroxysm of anger, when he suddenly pressed his hand to his side, his face turned a dusky hue, and he fell backwards, cutting his head against the corner of the treasure-chest. He was dead... (SIGN, 586)
