Civilian National Reserve

The Times (13 august 1914)

TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES.

Sir, — You were good enough to publish a letter from me advocating the formation of a Civilian National Reserve and offering to supply particulars of the organization which has been found to be practical. I have had in three days 250 applications for such particulars, as I have reason to believe many such bodies are forming. Might I beg them, through your columns, not to worry the authorities in any way, to do quietly what is ready to their hand — namely, to drill, shoot, and send on individuals to the more mobile forces — and to wait in patience on the chance that they may some day be of service ?

Yours faithfully,

ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE.
