Hugh C. Thornton about volunteers at Lydd

From The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia

This letter was written by Major Hugh C. Thornton (1881-1962), private secretary to Lord Milner in the War Cabinet, then Secretary of State for War and Secretary of State for the Colonies, on 13 august 1918 from the War Office, Whitehall S.W., London (UK), to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Letter

13th August, 1918.

Dear Sir,

In further reference to your letter of July 10th to Lord Milner, I am now desired to say that instructions were at once given for special enquiry to be made into the complaints as regards the treatment of Volunteers at Lydd, to which you referred in your letter.

Lord Milner thinks his best course is to send you a copy of the special report which was sent to him from the Major-General who was asked to investigate the complaints personally. This I now enclose.

Lord Milner trusts you will forgive him for not answering your letter personally, but he had to leave London directly after the enclosed report was received.

Yours faithfully,
Hugh C. Thornton
Major,
Private Secretary.
