Mr. Jabez Wilson by Sidney Paget‎

Jabez Wilson is a red-headed pawnbroker located in The City in Saxe-Coburg Square. His shop's cellar was used to dig a tunnel toward the City & Suburban Bank on the other side of the street. His assistant Vincent Spaulding (aka John Clay) incited him to work at The Red-Headed League in order to have him out of his shop. Jabez Wilson went to see Sherlock Holmes when The Red-Headed League was suddenly dissolved which occured him a loss of salary.

  • He is a very stout, florid-faced, elderly gentleman, with fiery red hair. (REDH, 1)
  • He bears every mark of the average commonplace British tradesman, obese, pompous, and slow. (REDH, 28)
  • He wears rather baggy grey shepherds' check trousers, a not over-clean black frock-coat, unbuttoned in the front, and a drab waistcoat with a heavy brassy Albert chain, and a square pierced bit of metal dangling down as an ornament. A frayed top-hat, and a faded brown overcoat with a wrinkled velvet collar lay upon a chair beside him. (REDH, 29)
  • He has done manual labour. He takes snuff. He is a Freemason. He has been in China. (REDH, 33)
  • He employs a girl of fourteen, who does a bit of simple cooking, and keeps the place clean. He is a widower and never had any family. (REDH, 94)
