Sir

No man with any heart or perception could read your description of Roger Casement's death sentence without shame and disgust. Such words in an English paper are likely to do more enduring political harm than ever your misguided Casement achieved. They will certainly be exploited by every enemy of England from Dublin to San Francisco.

Yours faithfully

Arthur Conan Doyle
