Letter to Herbert Greenhough Smith (12 december 1901)

From The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia
Conan Doyle's letter (ca. 1900)
Conan Doyle's letter (ca. 1900)

This letter was written by Arthur Conan Doyle, from Golden Cross Hotel, Charing Cross, W.C., London (UK), on 12 december 1901, before the publication of his book The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct (Smith, Elder & Co.), to Herbert Greenhough Smith, editor of The Strand Magazine.

George Murray Smith (of Smith, Elder & Co.) was dead in april 1901, so the letter was rather to Herbert Greenhough Smith (hint: "My dear Smith", and writing about Smith to the same Smith is not logical).

Letter

My dear Smith,

I am coming to the conclusion that Newnes can't help us. If we can get Smith heartily upon our side, and if we can give the venders all the projects we shall do very well.

Could you send a History to Adrian Hofmeyer, Carlton HoteL.

Yours always
A Conan DOYLE.
