Letter to S. S. McClure about Esquemeling

From The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia

This letter was written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1897 to Samuel S. McClure (editor of the McClure's Magazine).

Conan Doyle mentions Alexander Olivier Exquemeling [1] (1645-1707), known for having written "The Buccaneers of America", a story of the piracy. As McClure's Magazine published 3 pirates story in 1897 (The Governor of St. Kitt's in may, The Two Barks in july, The Voyage of Copley Banks in august), the letter was probably written in may-june 1897.

My dear McClure

Many thanks for you kindness. Esquemeling I have but the other two are new to me. I'll do my best to produce something readable.

Yours very truly

A. Conan Doyle

Thanks also for the magazines
