Lot No. 249 (TV 2023)
From The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia

Lot No. 249 is a British short TV movie, produced by Adorable Media, written and directed by Mark Gatiss, released on 24 december 2023 on BBC Two, starring Kit Harington as Abercrombie Smith. 29 minutes.
The movie is based upon Arthur Conan Doyle's short story Lot No. 249 (1892).
Mark Gatiss has introduced in the story a character credited as "The Friend" of Abercrombie Smith, which is not in the original story. The friend is in fact Sherlock Holmes himself, but his name is not mentioned in the movie. But it can be easily deduced by the following clues :
- "The Friend" mentioned that the ape-shape Abercrombie saw reminds him the case of old Presbury. Old Presbury is Professor Presbury in The Adventure of the Creeping Man, the 52th Sherlock Holmes story, who while under drugs was acting like an ape.
- "The Friend" also quoted Sherlock Holmes : "I stand flat footed upon the ground, and there it must remain." (52). "The world is big enough for us" (53). "No ghosts need apply." (54) in The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire, the 53rd Sherlock Holmes story.
- When Abercrombie Smith asked "The Friend" if he would return to London, he answered that he had his eyes on a room in Baker Street (Sherlock Holmes address in London). And asked Abercrombie if he would like to share it. He also added that a doctor would be a good companion to any man. Abercrombie as a pre-Watson candidate.
- Also, "The Friend"'s way of smoking pipe and gestures are the same than Sherlock Holmes (see photos below).
The end of the movie is different from the original story to add a more dramatic scene.
