Sixth match.

Victory of the Dutch.

The name AU Holland is rather nice for the Dutch national team, which in the morning of Saturday 22 August avoided the sight of the beautiful Clingendaal cricket pitch and neatly stretched mat, all prepared by the good care of Baron van Brienen, for which we owe him a debt of gratitude. Feith, Rouffaer, Weyerman and De Haas were missing from the XI, which had been brought together by Mr Muller.

The field was beautiful, the sky was less beautiful, and heavy drops were constantly lazing in the lead-coloured zütwerk; yet by eleven o'clock the sky cleared and C. Nolet, who won the toss, sends Kijken and Schröder to the wicket, against the bowling of Mariette and Doyle. Slowly but surely the score climbs and the 10 rises without losing a wicket. Many changes have been made in bowling, which cannot stop the 20, and when finally Schröder hits Sharman for 5, the enthusiasm is general. It was a great hit in the broom bushes and in all likelihood the ball is still there. Finally, with the score at 31, Schröder is caught by Halt in the panties for a beautiful 14, after which the chance returns. Watching, Doyle catches an overshooter from his own bowling, a lucky catch from Thomson cuts De Groot's lifeline.

The batsman gave a hard blow to cover point, the bright one reached out, the ball rose straight into the air and landed safely in Thoinson's hands. Posthuma succumbed to a well pitched ball, which blew his olfstump away and Gorter too was bowled for 2 shortly afterwards. C. Nolet lets go of almost all the crooked balls, finally strikes a right and is caught on thirdman by Sharman. The next three batsmen disappear before o. Hoeffelman is sadly run out. Oosterzee kills him in cold blood. And so it happened that there were 9 wickets for 45 down, but the last wicket costs money, because Oosterzee managed to make 9 runs through good play, while Mullemeister also contributes something. If the last one is taken over his leg by Webber, the total is 59. The innings had lasted 2 1/2 hours.

Soon after, Ricliniond and Thomson appear on the wicket; the latter plays for the first time. Soon it turns out that bowling is not to be mocked, as the batsmen have a lot of trouble keeping the troublesome balls. With a score of 3, Richmond is caught behind the wicket. His "heir to the throne" is Sharman, but the next ball, a beautiful bailer by Schröder, "rips him off the crown of the head", and the bails from the stumps. Webber and Hatt don't make it long either, Posthuma bowls them respectively with a soft yorker and a habitual rights ball Thomson is finally taken by Schröder in layingump. He had been bat for three quarters of an hour for 4 runs!

Doyle flips his wicket and Neilson is bowled between his legs by a Posthuma slow with an extraordinary off effect; there are 7 wickets for about 20 points; but now the score comes between Harrison and Mariette. Harrison soon be beats Schröder for 5 in the broom bushes and with horrible certainty the score climbs up. Successively the 30 and 40 go up; all seems lost, as the batsmen get more and more out of battle; unlucky for the English, Mariette ruins the match by running out Harrison, and now the end is soon there, as Herbert and Thomas don't pray much, and when the last wicket is taken by Schröder, the English are 11 points behind and the match is won in the first innings.

The Dutch are back on the bat again and Halt starts a kind of verbowling, i.e. hard underhand, of which Posthuma is still the victim; when it's time to break out, it's 1 for 14.

Of the Englishmen Harrison and Mariette are the best, scoring 22 and 7 not out respectively. None of the others put up much resistance to bowling, except Thomson on whom Schröder bowled 14 maidens in a row. Doyle and Mariette, especially the first one, bowled well.

Of the Dutchmen Schröder, Kijken and Oosterzee were the best at bat. Schröder bowled beautifully and also Posthuma very well.

The fielding was very good on both sides and was characterized by beautiful catchers from the side of the Englishmen. Harrison did an excellent goal again, also C Nolet played well. Umpires were Murray and Bentley.

Zesde wedstijd.

Oosterzee moordt hem in koelen bloede.
