On wednesday 4 january 1893, Arthur Conan Doyle presided and spoke after the lecture about "The Psychical Research Society" by Professor W. F. Barrett, at the Upper Norwood Literary and Scientific Society (UNLSS) meeting held at Norwood.

In moving a cordial vote of thanks to the lecturer, the chairman (Arthur Conan Doyle) mentioned how he had once belonged to a society who made similar investigations on a smaller scale, and related, amid much laughter, how they had once mesmerised a lady, and then found themselves unable to bring her back.
