The War and Continental Opinion

Sir, — My book, The Cause and Conduct of the South African War, is about to appear, published in the French form by the house of Galignani. May I say a few words to your readers upon the subject? It is an attempt to tell the true facts of the case to the French public and to dispel the cloud of lies which has obscured the issue. Our funds will enable us to send copies free to all politicians, journalists, and leaders of public opinion. But to get at the main body of the nation I wish to secure the co-operation of the British residing in France who can help me in this fight for truth.

I suggest that in each town, beginning with Paris, a local Committee be formed who will collect funds to buy the book at wholesale prices. It will be issued at half a franc, I believe, and sent to those quarters where it is most needed. If in each town I can get one Briton to organise such a Committee I have not the slightest doubt that the rest will easily follow. May I appeal to the patriotism of your readers that they will help me in this fashion for the sake of truth and of their country?

Yours faithfully,

A. CONAN DOYLE
