THE REPLIES.

Sir A. Conan Doyle:

I should say that the best answer to militants would be to form a law and order league. The members of this would be pledged to vote for no member of Parliament, irrespective of politics, who from this time onwards should in any way assist the cause of female suffrage until a clear two years have elapsed without a militant outrage. In this way every fresh crime would obviously throw back the cause to that extent. Every golf club could open lists of men pledged to this course. Moderate Suffragists would, I think, gladly join, as they must realise that their cause is doomed unless something is done to stop these mischievous and silly tricks. Each leaguer should notify his member.
