A match between two teams representing these counties took place on Saturday at Broadwater, near Worthing, the elevens being selected by the superintendents for Hants and Sussex of the Greesham Life Assurance Company (Mr. G. Barnden, of Southsea, and Mr. William, of Brighton). The local eleven, accompanied by friends, proceeded from Portsmouth by saloon carriage to Worthing, whence they drove to the match ground, and were joined by their opponents and a number of visitors. Hampshire won the toss and went to the wickets. Messrs. Agate and Cosens made a determined stand, freely hitting the several bowlers, and not being separated until 71 had been scored, when Mr. H. Love (captain of the Hampshire eleven), fielding as substitute, smartly caught at cover-point a low ball which had, been passed through point's hands. Mr. Cosens was shortly afterwards dismissed for 43, after a well played innings, his figures including a five, a four, and six threes. The Rev. F. B. Cotton and Mr. Hampton also handled the bat effectively, and the wickets fell as follow:— Second for 76 ; third, 84; fourth, 97; fifth, 103; sixth, 127; seventh, 134; eighth, 184; ninth, 185; and tenth, 195. The Sussex men on going to the wickets faced the bowling of Messrs. Agate and Hemingsley, and the ground suiting the former and the fielding being particularly good, the fanings closed for 55, Mr. Blacker being the only batsman to at all collar the bowling, and in his score of 41 being two five four fours. Mr. Agate did the hat trick, and his analysis was eight wickets for 32 runs, Sussex followed on, and Messrs. Adcock, Hampton, Thomas, Love, Agate, and Hemingsley, and the Rev. E. B. Cotton handled the leather, Mr. Thomas securing two wickets for 17 runs and Mr. Hemingsley two for 3. Hampshire thus, scored a single innings victory. The game attracted a number of spectators, and the arrangements for the Hants players were satisfactorily made by Mr. G. Barnden. Score:—
