PORTSMOUTH F.C. v. ROYAL ARTILLERY (HILSEA) RAMBLERS. — This match, under Association Rules, was played on Saturday on the ground or the former Club, near Stubbington Lodge, North End, the home team proving victorious by two goals to nil. The visitors won the toss, but the ball, on being kicked off, was soon taken up to their full backs. The game, however, lasted fully 20 minutes before Portsmouth scored, several good shots not proving successful. In the second half the home team registered their second goal, and if they had had any luck they ought to have obtained several others, the leather being repeatedly passed or dribbled right up to their opponents' citadel. Godfrey secured both goals, but the credit of one was really due to Poole for a splendid corner kick. The ball dropped just in front of the tape, and Godfrey smartly put it through at the second attempt, the leather having in the first instance struck one of the posts and rebounded to him. These two, with Pinfold, Huddy, and Russell, specially distinguished themselves by the spirit and skill with which they played, while [[Arthur Conan Doyle|A. C. Smith]]'s hard and safe kicking proved most serviceable. For the Ramblers Armstrong played in excellent form, and was well supported by Edmonds, Fletcher, and Norfod, as well as Hobbs.
