In the Sherlock Holmes stories
* Abe Slaney was the most dangerous crook in Chicago (DANC DANC).

* In his youth, he was engaged to Elsie Patrick (later Elsie Cubitt) when she was living in the criminal circles of Chicago (DANC DANC).

* After Elsie broke away from that life and moved to England, marrying Hilton Cubitt, Abe Slaney tracked her down and began sending her threatening messages in the secret "dancing men" cipher that her father had invented. His goal was to coerce her into leaving her husband and returning to him (DANC DANC).

* When persuasion failed, he escalated to threats, which eventually led to the confrontation at Ridling Thorpe Manor where Hilton Cubitt was killed (DANC DANC).

* Holmes lured him to the house using a forged “dancing men” note, leading to his arrest. He was sentenced to death but later had his penalty reduced to penal servitude because Cubitt had fired first (DANC DANC).
