That ultra-superfine amateur delective of [[Arthur Conan Doyle|A. Conan Doyle]]'s creations, Sherlock Holmes, was very much in evidence last night and his deductions" were greeted with hearty applause, while Pittsburgh's fad of demanding a speech was only avoided by the persistent silence of the actor-author, Mr. [[William Gillette]], whose realization of the famous detective of romance was a beautifully finished piece of work. At times he developed an energy of speech foreign to the general idea of the phlegmatic sleuth, but the dramatic license was indulged in other ways without detracting from the production. While the titular role's all Important, there is required a good company of lesser lights, and this is an excellent one, Miss [[Olive Oliver]] in particular attracting attention. When all is said, "[[Sherlock Holmes (play 1900 Alvin Theater)|Sherlock Holmes]]" remains a high-class melodrama, with many points of excellence. The interest is intense, the climaxes are naturally evolved. and with the accessories of good staging and a liberal use of dark changes to add to the impressiveness, it is one of the finest plays of its character seen here for a long time.
