Tegnap este óta érdekes vendégünk van : [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Conan Doyle]], a [[Sherlock Holmes]]-rcgények szerzője, a detektiv-király megteremtője. Tegnap este érkezett Konstantinápolyból Budapestre feleségével és a Hungária-szállodában vett lakást.

Ma este a II. emelet 201. számú szobájában fogadott. [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Conan Doyle]] nyájas, szőke arczu férfi, barátságos mosolylyal fogadta üdvözlésemet. Magas termetű, nagy szőke bajusza van, kék szeme s mindjárt első pillanatra kellemes benyomást kelt. Széles vállai, izmos karjai, erős testalkata, mondhatnám jóképű, intelligens dijbirkózónak tüntetik fel.

A mikor megmondtam neki, hogy Budapest legrégibb rendőri riportere vagyok, barátságosan megszorította kezemet és tört németséggel, mosolyogva mondotta :

— Ah, ez engem is érdekel. Már le akartam feküdni, a mikor önt bejelentették. Szívesen fogadtam volna amúgy is, de tudva, hogy rendőri tudósitó, kétszeresen jól esik üdvözölnöm. Tehát én a szakmájába vágó dolgokról Írtam. Ön sok érdekes biinügyi esetet tapasztalhatott; az életet alaposan ismerheti. A rendőri riporternek elég alkalma nyílik az élet nyomorúságát is, szépségét is megismerni.

— Egyelőre nincsen. Most nászuton vagyok; feleségemmel megnézem Európa nagyobb városait; Budapestről holnap este Parisba utazom, ott is hosszabb bideig tartózkodunk. Ma megnéztem a magyar fővárost ; megcsodáltam parlamentjüket, benn is voltam e díszes épületben, a melynek egész Európában nincsen párja. Nászutamról visszatérve, bizonynyal uj munkába fogok. Ismétlem azonban, hogy pozitív tervem még nincsen. Nászutamon gyűjtöttem Írásra való anyagot és újabb müveimnél ezt fel is fogom használni.

Beszélgetés közben elmondottam neki egy érdekes Bérczi-esetet, a mikor a hires kapitány egy csemegeüzletben, egy betörés színhelyén megjelenve, egy kaviáros hordónak a földre ömlött tartalmában megtalálta a tettes czipőjének a nyomát, megállapította, hogy katonaczipő volt s ennek alapján kinyomozta azt a közkatonát, a ki a betörést elkövette. Egy laktanyában ugyanis megtalálták a kaviáros talpú czipőt.

Since last night, we have had an interesting guest: [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Conan Doyle]], the author of the [[Sherlock Holmes]] novels, the creator of the detective king. He arrived in Budapest last night from Constantinople with his wife and took a room at the Hungária Hotel.

This evening, he received me in room 201 on the second floor. [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Conan Doyle]] greeted my salutation with a friendly, cordial smile. He is tall, with a large blonde mustache and blue eyes, making a pleasant impression at first glance. His broad shoulders, muscular arms, and strong physique give him the appearance of a handsome, intelligent wrestler.

When I told him that I was Budapest's oldest police reporter, he shook my hand warmly and, smiling, said in broken German:

— Ah, this interests me as well. I was about to go to bed when you were announced. I would have gladly received you anyway, but knowing that you are a police reporter, I am doubly pleased to welcome you. So, I wrote about things related to your profession. You must have experienced many interesting criminal cases; you must know life thoroughly. The police reporter has plenty of opportunities to get to know both the misery and the beauty of life.

— I am amazed, - I said - to see such a youthful man before me.

— Well, forty-seven years are already weighing on my shoulders; but a few weeks ago, I became a happy husband and went on a honeymoon with my wife. It is possible that this lends me the charm of youth.

— If I am not being indiscreet, — I asked — could you kindly tell me how you came up with the idea to create the now world-famous character of [[Sherlock Holmes]]?

— I am happy to tell you. Everything good and beautiful that I know was taught to me by my teacher, [[Joseph Bell|Dr. Joseph Bell]], a professor at the University of Edinburgh. We are both of Scottish descent. At the university, I attended [[Joseph Bell|Professor Bell]]'s lectures in the medical faculty. [[Joseph Bell|Professor Bell]], who is still alive today, is to medical science what [[Sherlock Holmes]] is to detective novels. What other people, no matter how excellent doctors they are, fail to see, [[Joseph Bell|Professor Bell]]'s sharp eye and excellent observational skills immediately recognize. I always admired this keen insight in him. This gave me the idea to create [[Sherlock Holmes]].

— When I finished my university studies and obtained my medical degree, I started writing and modeled the detective novels' character on [[Joseph Bell|Professor Bell]]. [[Sherlock Holmes]]'s observations, which begin with small, invisible traces to others, are all [[Joseph Bell|Professor Bell]]'s. The reader thinks these observations are fictional, but they are not. These observations indeed exist. [[Joseph Bell|Professor Bell]], who is now a very old man, is still the same great observer in terms of his physical and mental strength. When people began to love my novels, he derived the greatest joy from it.

— Do you have any new plans for the coming year?

— Not at the moment. I am currently on my honeymoon; my wife and I are visiting the major cities of Europe. Tomorrow evening, we will travel from Budapest to Paris, where we will stay for a longer period. Today, I explored the Hungarian capital; I admired your parliament, even went inside this magnificent building, which has no equal in all of Europe. After returning from my honeymoon, I will surely start a new project. However, I repeat, I do not have a definite plan yet. I have gathered material for writing during my honeymoon and will use it for my new works.

During our conversation, I told him about an interesting case involving Captain Bérczi. The famous captain appeared at the scene of a burglary in a delicatessen store and found the footprint of the perpetrator in the spilled contents of a caviar barrel. He determined that it was a military boot, and based on this, he tracked down the private who had committed the burglary. The caviar-soled shoe was found in a barracks.
