Anyone who is interested in seeing an improvement in our present marriage laws must be disheartened by the opposition of the Rev. F. S. Myers in the [[Empire News]].

So far as his criticisms go, I would remind him that our main platform is that which was recommended by Lord Gorell's majority-report in 1912, and that upon that powerful committee there was not a single individual save those who were ''officially'' connected with the Church who did not see the matter as we see it now. Sir George White, M.P., was the special representative of Non-conformity, and he took the same view.

So did Lord Gorell himself, the first authority in England upon the subject, together with Lady Frances Balfour, Mrs. Tennant, Mr. Burt, Mr. Spender, Lord Guthrie, Judge Atkinson, Mr. Brierley, Sir F. Treves, and, as it is understood, Lord Derby.

Mr. Myers finds himself in a minority consisting of an archbishop, an ecclesiastical lawyer, and the Warden of an Oxford College. It seems a strange position.

As to divorce for lunacy, Mr. Myers says that the doctors were against it, but as a matter of fact, the committee who listened to their evidence decided in their Majority Report that it was advisable, so that they do not appear to have received the same impression from the evidence.

Neither Mr. Myers nor any other opponent of our movement has ever yet explained why British law upon this point should differ from every other Protestant country in the world (save Newfoundland), and be stiffer than such Catholic countries as Belgium and Bavaria.

Mr. Myers quotes from some Bill which he imagines to be in existence. I can assure him that this is all a mistake and that there is no such draft Bill.

The misconception arose from some too zealous member of the Parliamentary Committee publishing a document which was not meant for publication, and which embodied a central principle without the limitations and guarantees which were to be added.

I can assure Mr. Myers that I would myself never favour a law which did not specify that each case must be tried on its merits before a British judge or magistrate.

This alone is a perfect safeguard against fanciful abuses.
