TO RETIRE FROM LITERARY LABORS TO COUNTRY PURSUITS.

Some Interesting Incidents of the Life and Work of the Creator of a World-Famous Character.

Sherlock Holmes is tired and is to make his final farewell to the public next month. As he says of himself: "For a long time he has nursed the idea of a country life, with its simple delights. He will take a little place and go in for bee-keeping."

A. Conan Doyle is but 45 years old, a youthful age at which to retire, but after a little rest and country quiet perhaps the author will again take up his pen and re-resurrect our old friend of much vitality, Sherlock Holmes. Mr. Doyle, though scarcely elderly, has written for many a year, being but a youth of 17 when he began his literary career. At that time he was studying medicine, but found leisure to turn out considerable work, having 60 short stories to his account before his popularity was noticeable and demands made for his work.

It was while studying medicine he got his idea for Sherlock Holmes. One of his Edinburg professors was a remarkably keen observer, and the al most uncanny way in which he could read the students before him made a lasting impression on at least one of them. Dr. Doyle says Sherlock Holmes is the literary embodiment of his memory of this professor, "who would sit in the patients' waiting room, with a face like a red Indian and diagnose the people, as they came, before even they had opened their mouths. He would tell them their symptoms, give them details of their lives, and he would hardly ever make a mistake."

Mr. Doyle was born and raised in Edinburg and it may be this had something to do with his admiration of Scotland's great romancers, and his fondness for stories of adventure and for the historical novel. The author's father was an artist, but the son was appointed to follow the medical profession rather than the call of art, and for considerable time practiced this profession; in the small leisure of a medical student stealing time to work at his beloved writing. After assured success was his as a writer, he entirely gave up the practice of medicine, and immediately began evolving the career of Sherlock Holmes.

Though Conan Doyle — Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, if you please — has won most unusual fame and at an unusually early age, it should be borne in mind that the fame was hardly won, that there were years and years of struggle against odds that would have discouraged aught but the pluckiest, that often must have made the striver doubt whether after all it were well to keep up faith in himself, if he better not surrender the effort and settle down to plodding.

For ten years he wrote and sent off MSS. to publishers, and never in that time made so much as $800 a year. But all the time he kept steadily to his deal of thoroughness and infinite painstaking, kept on sending out his wares, returned manuscripts coming back only to be sped on anew. Of this period he thus humorously writes: 'Fifty little cylinders of manuscripts did I send out during eight years which described irregular orbits among publishers, and usually came back, like paper boomerangs, to the place they had started from."

In 1886, the Christmas Annual published "A Study in Scarlet," which when later issued in book form passed into numberless editions. In this, which may be called his first novel, Sherlock Holmes is introduced to the reader. Always fond of history, the author presently set to work on gathering material for a novel that should give a vivid picture of the time under consideration, and for "Micah Clarke" he read diligently for 12 months; then spent another half-year in writing the story. It went from publisher to publisher, was dubbed uninteresting, inaccurate, impossible. But the "reckless publisher" at last was found, and "Micah Clarke" saw the light of day. In less than a year it passed through five editions.

"The Sign of the Four" helped on his name and then "The White Company," now came the climax of his career, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," and the pampered public showed wonderful interest. "Sherlock Holmes" is in everybody's mouth — has been for years and will be for years — grown men and women, schoolgirl and boy, people of all classes and degrees know the creation of the man that tells a rattling good tale. A. Conan Doyle.
