I thought the first number of [[The_Arthur_Conan_Doyle_Society_(1989-2003)#A.C.D._-_The_Journal_of_The_Arthur_Conan_Doyle_Society|A.C.D.]] quite splendid, finding it so interesting to read. I do think it remarkable that so soon after founding the Society, you were able to produce such a well balanced study of such varied aspects of my father's life. I may not agree with everything I read, but I didn't expect to, and I did find so much that was fascinating, and even new, to me.

There were a few errors I spotted. In the article [[Conan Doyle and Homes]], they are:

It's true that my parents were reburied in the churchyard at Minstead, but that village is a long way from Crowborough. It's in the New Forest, a place which had always held a special attraction for my parents.

[[Catherine Cooke]] is quite right about [[Hesketh Pearson|Pearson]]'s error regarding the date when my father took the flat in Buckingham Palace Road. He took it in order to be able to keep an eye on the [[The Psychic Bookshop|Psychic Bookshop]]. We often went there during school holidays. It was then my father used to take me to watch a lot of cricket at Lords, and used to take us all to the theatre. It was a nice, solid, old-fashioned flat with bay windows. I remember the flat so well, but not whether it was on the third or second floor. I rather think the third.

My [[Arthur Conan Doyle|father]] bought Bignell Wood (not, in our day, "House") not for any reason to do with Spiritualism. It was a present to my [[Jean Elizabeth Leckie|mother]] (who had spent girlhood holidays in the New Forest) — be hoped it would be an escape from the busy lives they spent at Crowborough, at the [[The Psychic Bookshop|Psychic Bookshop]], and travelling about lecturing; and for my brothers and I to spend holidays. Prior to his buying the house, he rented a house in Lyndhurst two summers running for the summer holidays. To say the house had an undesirable reputation is absolute nonsense. When Higham wrote about it, he committed one inaccuracy after another — some outrageously so. Someone had a fertile imagination — and this can be proved.

I know nothing about The Grange, London S.E.25, but it's not the first time I've read that my father lived in a house hitherto unknown to me. It seems to be a selling point.

Finally, in the photograph taken at Mill Pond, in the article on [[The Conan Doyle Establishment (U.K.)]], my mother's dress tells me it must have been a few years before 1920.

=== From Mrs. John Doyle ===

There its some confusion about the name of the rented house at Haslemere in which the [[Arthur Conan Doyle|Conan Doyle]] family lived for a time before going to Undershaw. I believe this house was called "Grayswood Beeches".

This is borne out by captions which were written on two photographs by [[Mary Louise Conan Doyle|Mary Conan Doyle]]. One of these is of [[Mary Louise Conan Doyle|Mary]] herself in the drive, the other of her father and Kingsley on the terrace of Grayswood Beeches. The latter is the same photograph which appears in Julian Symons' excellent book, ''Portrait of an Artist — Conan Doyle''.

Believing that [[Mary Louise Conan Doyle|Mary]] might have mistaken the spelling of the house, I looked at [[John Francis Innes Hay Doyle|Innes Hay Doyle]]'s diaries for the years 1896 and 1897, when he was with his regiment at Topsham, near Exeter. There are several entries showing that he went to Haslemere on leave, but he does not give the name of any house there. However, it is interesting to note that on two occasions he mentions going over to see Undershaw, the second occasion being on 24 January 1897. The weather was very cold, with drifting snow. The entry reads: "Another quiet day. Walked with A. to Hindhead and saw the new house which is progressing very well."

Towards the end of July of that year, Innes joined the family which had gove from Moorlands to stay in Eastbourne "Found the [[Mary Josephine Elizabeth Foley|Mam]], [[Louisa Hawkins|Touie]], [[Caroline Mary Burton Doyle|Lottie]], [[Arthur Conan Doyle|Arthur]] etc. in good form", he noted: His fist visit to stay at Undershaw was on Friday 22 October, and he reported that he found the new house very confortable.

In November, [[John Francis Innes Hay Doyle|Innes]] was again at Undershaw for a longer leave, and it is only now that the name "Grayswood" enters the diary. The two brothers went hunting on several occasions, including 20 November, when [[John Francis Innes Hay Doyle|Innes]] says: "... Hunted with the Chiddingfold at Grayswood... A. and I were both at the end, as was everyone else..." Reference to a map shows that Grayswood is a small village east of Haslemere and Hindhead. A friend who later attended the first [[Louisa Hawkins|Lady Conan Doyle]]'s funeral at nearby Grayshott (also spelled with an "a") lived at Lower Grayswood, Haslemere, so it appears perhaps that the name is not uncommon for houses in that neighbourhood. It was pure chance then that led me to [[Arthur Conan Doyle|Conan Doyle]]'s descriptive poem on hunting, With the Chiddingfolds — I was looking in vain for a clue to answer the query in the Journal about "The Last Stand of the Greys". In [[Memories and Adventures]], [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Sir Arthur]] says: "Though a heavy man and quite an indifferent rider, I have never hurt myself in a fair selection of falls in the hunting field and elsewhere." [[John Francis Innes Hay Doyle|Innes]] was not so lucky, and his outings with the hunt that year came to an abrupt end of 7 December, when he was riding a Dr. Butler's bay horse. He had the misfortune to have a fall over a hedge with wire in it and, as a result, broke his collar-bone. "... Very kind people sent me home in Victoria. Butler and [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Arthur]] set it..." was his typically laconic report.

Subsequent reference to the Bibliography by Green and Gibson shows one further mention of the Chiddingfold Hunt. On 7 August 1905, [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Sir Arthur]] proposed the toast "The Master and the Chiddingfold Hounds" at a dinner for the tenant farmers and keepers.
