Henry Ward Beecher (24 june 1813 - 8 march 1887) was an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God's love, and his 1875 adultery trial. His rhetorical focus on the love of Christ has influenced mainstream Christianity through the 21st century.
In the Sherlock Holmes stories
* Sherlock Holmes remarked that Dr. Watson had his eyes fixed upon his newly-framed picture of General Gordon (CARD CARD). And his eyes flashed across to the unframed portrait of Henry Ward Beecher which stands upon the top of his books (CARD CARD). So Sherlock Holmes deduced that Dr. Watson were thinking that if the portrait were framed, it would just cover that bare space and correspond with Gordon's picture over there (CARD CARD).
