HORNDEAN v. PORTSMOUTH. — This return Association match was played at Horndean on Saturday, and resulted in a victory for the visitors by four goals to love. The ground was somewhat swampy, rendering the play slow and the ball treacherous, but Portsmouth, with one man short, completely penned down their opponents throughout the game, the borough goal keeper never once having to handle the leather. Horndean, it is true, had not its best team in the field, owing, in part, to the heavy rain which fell up to the beginning of the match, but for Portsmouth A. H. Godfrey dribbled in fine style. A. H. Kindersley worked with characteristic energy, R. E. Davies (captain) made some dashing runs, and the backs were so safe in their kicking and tackling that they were never once passed so as to put the Portsmouth citadel in danger. A. Moore obtained two goals, and [[Arthur Conan Doyle|A. C. Smith]] and Godfrey one each. Two others were disallowed, one being kicked by Adames from a long shot at the calling half time. G. E. Westbrooke made a gallant struggle for Horndean, but was not powerfully supported. Sides:— '''Portsmouth''': Goal, R. Hemingsley; full backs, [[Arthur Conan Doyle|A. C. Smith]] and W. Peters; half backs, W. O. Adames and J. Poole; centre forward, A. H. Godfrey; right wing, R. E. Davies and R. Young; left wing, A. E. Kindersley and A. Moore. '''Horndean''': Goal, J. Penny; backs, Pescott and G. E. Westbrooke; half backs, Brown and Bishop; forwards, Ford, Manns, Penny, Morris, Marstone, and Bone.
