Sherlock Holmes first made his bow in A Study in Scarlet, and if you take the trouble to read the book you will see how he developed as the years rolled on. The first illustrator was Sidney Paget, who took as his model his brother, Wal Paget, also an artist, a thin and ascetic-looking person, and the direct antithesis to the hideously ugly individual that Conan Doyle originally launched upon an unparalleled career of crime detection and nicotine consumption. Who would have played the part on the stage if the stories had not been illustrated we can only guess — certainly not William Gillette nor Eille Norwood.
