My dear Smith

I still adhere to my statement. The middle day of the Century <u>is</u> Jan 1st 1850. The Century ends with Dec 31, 1899.

There were a good many errors in that first instalment. Something about 'wild goats — be goats' which I could make nothing of. In that last proof it <u>should</u> be Virgil not [[Horace|Hôrace]] for 'Sub tegmine fagi'. <ref>Referring to his novel [[Rodney Stone]].</ref>
