Conan Doyle mentions Alexander Olivier Exquemeling <ref>Also spelled "Esquemeling" as Conan Doyle did in his letter</ref> (1645-1707), known for having written "The Buccaneers of America", a story of the piracy. As [[McClure's Magazine]] published 3 pirates story in 1897 ([[The Governor of St. Kitt's]] in may, [[The Two Barques|The Two Barks]] in july, [[The Voyage of Copley Banks]] in august), the letter was probably written in may-june 1897. <br />
