Alderman Rathbone presided, and the building was crowded. The proceedings having been briefly opened by the chairman, [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Dr. A. Conan Doyle]] delivered a lecture on &quot;[[Some Facts about Fiction|Facts about Fiction]].&quot; Having referred to the past history of fiction, he said that in the present day they had not writers of fiction who held the same place in the public mind as that held by Thackeray or Dickens ; but if such great writers were wanting, the average remained as high as ever, and they wrote with a closer insight into the true principles of fiction. He predicted, however, that their literature is the future, owing to influence at work, might be not less, but more brilliant than in the past.
