Dear Sir, — I assure you that the writer of "Notes on Books" (in the "Weekly Chronicle" of June 10) is quite mistaken. In spite of the "Literary World," Madame de Montespan is "not" executed in my [[The Refugees|novel]], and Louis XIV. has nothing to do with the incident from which he quotes. I explain in the preface the only liberty I take with history, which is a very trivial one. — I am, &c.,
