The Scottish Office has declined to accede to [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle]]'s appeal that [[Oscar Slater]], condemned to penal servitude for life in 1909 for the murder of a woman in Glasgow, should be released.

The Secretary for Scotland states in a letter that he does not feel justified in advising any interference with [[Oscar Slater|Slater]]'s sentence, but added that he was prepared to see [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Sir A. Conan Doyle]] should he desire an interview, [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Sir A. Conan Doyle]] replied:— <q>"As your decision is announced, I can see no object in an interview. I need not say that I am disappointed. I have done my best to set this injustice right. The responsibility must now lie with you."</q>
