PORTSMOUTH F.A. v. GRAMMAR SCHOOL. — This Association match took place at Hilsea on Saturday, when the School, though playing a skilful and plucky game, were defeated by five goals to two. They started with the wind in their favour, but the combined play of the Portsmouth forwards led to a series of attacks being made on their citadel, and after the School had retaliated, Godfrey, who had made several good shots, succeeded in registering a goal for the borough team. A second was kicked by G. L. Pares, and then some neat passing between Smith, Owen, and Edmonds resulted in the latter scoring for the School in pretty style. The next point for Portsmouth was registered by Boyle, so that on changing ends the School were to the lead. Rain came on, but the School worked well against the wind, and Smith obtained for them a lucky goal, A. C. Smith putting the leather between the posts in trying to head it back. The borough eleven then put on a spurt, and Godfrey kicked a fourth goal, while Boyle secured a fifth by a fine screw shot. For Portsmouth all the forwards did well, the passing being rapid and correct and the shooting pretty true, while Kindersley and the other half-backs, supported them efficiently, the heavy kicking of A. C. Smith also proving most serviceable. For the School Smith was a useful centre, and Edmonds and Owen dangerous on the right wing, Seddon also showing prom sing form on the other wing, while the Rev. Norman Pares worked with characteristic energy at half-back and "Henery" also saved his side several times when hard pressed. It should be stated that the School would have had a third goal, but for the leather being handled by one of the Portsmouth half-backs, and that on a free kick being given near the Portsmouth uprights Smith put in a shot that the borough Club found difficult to save. Teams — Portsmouth: Goal, W. O. Adames ; backs, A. C. Smith and R. Hemingsley ; half-backs, A. E.
