PORTSMOUTH F.C. v. HAYLING ISLAND. — Thin return Association match came off on Saturday at North End, and was won by the home team by seven goals to one, exclusive of another goal, kicked by Portsmouth, that was disputed. The borough club started one man short, and in a few minutes Gregory had obtained a point for the visitors. Portsmouth had been caught napping, but put at once upon their metal, its representatives played up in fine style, the fine dribbling and neat passing of the forwards and the strong defence of the backs giving them the best of the game by a long way. Penfold kicked three goals, Godfrey two, Williams (who had been in goal during the first half of the match) one, and the seventh went between the posts off one of the Hayling backs, while Fearman obtained an eighth, which was disputed. Several of these points were the result of some exceedingly pretty passing, and though Kindersley and Smith did not happen to score they showed excellent form. Poole's corner-kicking was as clever as usual, and the tackling and punting of the full backs was a real treat; indeed, the borough goal keeper had had only to handle twice or three times, so well did the backs do their work. Gregory, Westbrook, H. G. Trigg, and Walsham renderer valuable service for Hayling, which in the first match with Portsmouth succceeded in making a draw, both sides scoring three goals each. Teams — '''Portsmouth''': Goal, Williams; backs, [[Arthur Conan Doyle|A. C. Smith]] and W. Peters; half backs, J. Poole, W. C. Adames (captain), and R. Hemingsley; forwards, centre, A. H. Godfrey; right wing, J. H. Smith and C. T. Pearman; left wing, C. E. Pinfold and A. E. Kindersley. '''Hayling''' : F. Russell; backs, H. J. Trigg and F. Trigg; half backs, F. Watts and A. Earle; forwards: centre, C. Walsham and C. Watson; right wing, G. Westbrook and Grocery; left wing, T. Mason and A. Porte. Portsmouth, which so far during its present successful season has scored 80 goals to 28 recorded agaisnt it, will on March 20th meet the Bournemouth Rovers (the oldest Association Club in Hants and Dorset and the present holder of the Senior Challenge Cup) on the Officers Recreation Ground, and this important fixture is regarded with considerable interest by Association players throughout both counties.
