''Robert Sidney Smith'' (13 february 1877 - 20 october 1935), known as '''Sidney Smith''', was famous for creating the influential comic strip ''The Gumps'' (1917-1959), based on an idea by Captain Joseph M. Patterson, editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune.<br />

Between 1912 and 1914, he did 86 comic strips [[Sherlock Holmes Jr. (comic strip)|Sherlock Holmes Jr.]] in [[The Chicago Tribune]], which was renamed as "Pussyfoot Sam" after the 67th episode, probably at the behest of [[Arthur Conan Doyle]]'s lawyers, and lasted after 19 episodes only under the new name.<br />
