Efforts to "humanise" [[Sherlock Holmes]] are made, not with complete success, in the elaborate Goldwyn film, "[[Sherlock Holmes (movie 1922)|Moriarty]]," now running at the kinemas.

The screen drama has been "adapted from [[William Gillette]]'s celebrated play, founded on [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Sir A. Conan Doyle]]'s famous stories"; and, as a cousin twice removed, bears only a slight relationship with the original. In the hands of that fine American actor, [[John Barrymore]], the great detective becomes a romantic almost sentimental hero, very different from the stern super-man of [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Doyle]]. The plot, also, lacks the clean logical precision and the matter-of-fact restraint which were as effective in the stories.
