Mr. [[Jacques Futrelle]] was one of the best known of the younger generation of American journalists, though he had of late left journalism to devote his talents to the writing of novels and short stories. Born in 1876, he engaged in newspaper work from 1902 to 1904. The theatre claimed his attention as manager for the next two years, after which he served in the office of the ''Boston American'' for a like period. Among the best known of the books he wrote are "The Chase of the Golden Plate," "The Thinking Machine," "The Simple Case of Susan," "The Diamond Master," and "Elusive Isabel." In America he was looked upon as a budding [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Conan Doyle]].
