An amusing story against himself is told by [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle]]. During a lecture tour through the United States he arrived one day in Boston, and to his astonishment was approached by a cabman, who accosted him by name. <q>"How did you know who I was?"</q> asked [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Sir Arthur]] much interested, and not a little flattered by the recognition. "Well, if you'll excuse my saying so," was the reply, "the lapels of your coat look as if they had been grabbed by New York reporters, your hair looks as if it had been cut in Philadelphia, your hat looks as if you had had to stand your ground in Chicago, and—and——" <q>"And what?"</q> asked [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle|Sir Arthur]]. "Well," replied the cabman with a twinkle in his eye, "I saw 'Conan Doyle' in big white letters on your trunk."
