The Arthur Conan Doyle Society is pleased to announce that plans have now been finalised for the Society's weekend in March of 1993. The weekend will take place from 19-21 March in Edinburgh, one of the oldest and most atmospheric cities in Europe. The city holds much that is of interest to the student of Arthur Conan Doyle, and the aim of the weekend is to combine some of Edinburgh's Doylean sites and associations with analyses and discussions of his life and works.

The event will begin on the afternoon of Friday, 19 March with registration at the Scandic Crown Hotel. Only five minutes walk from the train station, the Scandic Crown is a four-star hotel located in the heart of Edinburgh on the historic Royal Mile. Those who are able to reach Edinburgh by early afternoon will be able to attend the weekend's first event: a viewing of ACD's unpublished doctoral thesis, 'An Essay Upon the Vasomotor Changes in Tabes Dorsalis', at the University Library.

In the early evening a ghost tour of old Edinburgh is planned, enabling participants to view some of Edinburgh's hidden corners and learn something of the city's colourful history. On Friday evening the weekend proper is scheduled to begin with introductory remarks and a talk by

Jon Lellenberg discussing the biogra- phical problem of Arthur Conan Doyle.

Following breakfast on Saturday there will be a talk by Owen Dudley Edwards on the subject of ACD's unpublished early ghost story, 'The Haunted Grange of Goresthorpe." Following the talk attendees will proceed to the National Library of Scotland to view the manuscript, which became part of the Library's collection when Blackwood's Maga- zine, to whom ACD had unsuccess- fully submitted the tale, closed in 1978 and donated their archives to the Library.

After returning to the hotel for morning coffee, participants will set out on a proposed coach tour of the Edinburgh of Arthur Conan Doyle. The city contains many sites that are relevant to ACD's life and works, and places of interest will be pointed out and discussed during the tour. There will also be opportunities for photographs to be taken.

Lunch at the Scandic Crown will be followed by an afternoon of presentations relevant to the life and works of Arthur Conan Doyle, including a paper by Richard Lancelyn Green and a look at the notorious Edinburgh murderers Burke and Hare, who were to provide ACD with inspiration for some of his fiction. Other papers are planned, and full details of presenters and papers will be mailed to those attending before the weekend. There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion after each presentation.

Saturday night's formal dinner in the Scandic Crown's Great Scottish Hall will be followed by a discussion of The White Company by Professor Kenneth Fowler of the University of Edinburgh. It is hoped to round off the evening with a late night film presentation.

After breakfast on Sunday morning there will be a panel discussion featuring Owen

Dudley Edwards, Professor Wallace Robson, Richard Lancelyn Green, and Christopher Roden, who are contributing to Oxford University Press's forthcoming re-publication of the entire Holmesian canon. As with Saturday, Sunday's program is not yet complete, but we are hoping to include a paper discussing ACD's supernatural fiction. The weekend will conclude shortly after noon on Sunday.

The cost of the full weekend package will be £165 per person, with no extra supplement necessary for those wishing a single room. The full package includes accommodation on Friday and Saturday nights; full breakfast on Saturday and Sunday; lunch and a formal dinner on Saturday; morning coffee and afternoon tea on Saturday; morning coffee on Sunday; entrance to all lectures and presentations; any coach fees; and the planned Ghost Tour. The Society has also negotiated with the Scandic Crown to provide a special room rate for those who wish to arrive early or extend their stay: £45 per person per night, inclusive of full breakfast and V.A.T. This compares favourably with the Scandic Crown's normal rates of £99 (single room) and £129 (double room) per night, which is exclusive of breakfast. A reduction of the cost of the full weekend package will be available for those people who cannot arrive until Saturday or who live in or near Edinburgh and do not require accommodation. The Society is aiming to provide as extensive yet self-contained a weekend as possible, with involvement from all those attending. Places are therefore limited, and we would ask that those people interested in attending fill out the enclosed booking form and return it to The Arthur Conan Doyle Society, with a deposit of £35 per person attending, no later than 15 December, 1992.

=== The Scandic Crown Hotel ===

One of the newest hotels to grace Edinburgh is the four-star Scandic Crown. Located in the heart of Edinburgh, on the Royal Mile, it is a truly luxurious hotel which offers every amenity.

Each of the 238 guest rooms contains direct dial telephone, radio, colour television with complimentary in-house movies and satellite TV, garment press, hairdryer, mini-bar, security safe, complimentary tea/coffee making facilities, individual heating control and luxury en-suite bathroom. Non-smoking rooms are also available.

The Scandic Crown has two restaurants: Rhapsody Bistro and the Jewel A La Carte Restaurant. The Rhapsody Bistro is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and features a daily Scandinavian smorgasbord lunch. Dinner entrees start at £7.50. The Jewel A La Carte is open for lunch from Monday to Saturday and for dinner seven days a week. Dinner entrees start at £13.95. In addition, light meals and afternoon tea, coffee, and biscuits are available from the cocktail bar in the main lobby, and Room Service runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Those who wish some light entertainment might like to visit the Piano Bar, which is open from 17:00-02:00 hours Monday to Saturday.

The Scandic Crown offers a health club, which is complimentary for hotel guests. It is fully equipped with a pool, gymnasium, saunas, sunbed (for which there is a nominal charge), and a health bar. Those who forget their bathing costumes can rent one from the health club.

The hotel is easily accessible no matter how you are travelling to Edinburgh. Those who arrive by car will be relieved to know that the hotel has a 150-space car park, and parking is free for hotel guests. Those arriving by train will have no difficulty either, as the Scandic Crown is a five minute walk or three minute taxi ride from Waverley train station.

To all this must be added the marvellous setting of the hotel. It is only minutes away from many of the historic attractions of Edinburgh, and the stores of Princes Street are a ten minute walk away. Those staying on after the weekend will find the Scandic Crown to be an ideal base from which to explore Edinburgh.

=== The Athens of the North ===

Edinburgh is one of the oldest cities in Europe: but where other cities spread out as they grew, Edinburgh built upwards, as its citizens huddled along the ridge bounded by Edinburgh Castle at the top and the Palace of Holyrood- house at the base. The resulting tenements, some as high as four- teen storeys, led to a maze of warrens, closes, and wynds in which noblemen, thieves, artisans, and shopkeepers jostled for space. It was not until the late eighteenth century that the city's inhabitants felt safe enough to venture across the newly built North Bridge and settle on the other side of what is now Princes Street Gardens.

Much of the history of Edinburgh can be seen today along the Royal Mile in the Old Town: St Giles Cathedral, John Knox's House, Lady Stair's House, Gladstone's Land, Mowbray House, the Canongate Tolbooth, Huntly House, and of course the Castle and the Palace. A walk across the North Bridge brings you to Princes Street, dominated by the Scott Monument, and the fine Georgian architecture of the New Town. The National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy overlook the Princes Street Gardens, while Calton Hill and its strange collection of buildings and monuments affords fine views over the entire city. Arthur's Seat, the extinct volcano beside the Palace, also offers splendid views and rambles.

Edinburgh is also rich in literary associations. Lady Stair's House near the Castle is now a museum devoted to the works of three of Scotland's (and indeed the world's) most famous and best-loved authors: Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Mowbray House on the High Street was, in 1710, where Daniel Defoe worked as editor of the Edinburgh Courant. The city itself has provided inspiration and settings for works by authors as diverse as Tobias Smollett (The Expedition of Humphry Clinker), James Hogg (The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner), Rebecca West (The Judge), George Borrow (Lavengro), Muriel Spark (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), and of course Arthur Conan Doyle.

This special issue of The Parish Magazine has been prepared in order that members of The Arthur Conan Doyle Society may have full and clear information regarding the Society's Edinburgh '93 weekend in advance of information which would, ordinarily, have been despatched with the Society's 1993 Journal. Edinburgh '93 is the Society's most prestigious event to date, and it is hoped that as many members as possible will lend their support. Please remember, however, that spaces on the weekend are limited and early booking is, therefore, essential.

Some major editorial changes have taken place for the 1993 Journal. Christopher Roden has been joined on the joint editorial team by Barbara Alder of Vancouver, British Columbia. Following the success of the facsimile of 'The Dying Detective' which was produced jointly last year with The Arthur Conan Doyle Society, Westminster Libraries announce the publication of a facsimile of 'The Lion's Mane', a joint production with The Sherlock Holmes Society of London, on 20 October 1992.
'The Lion's Mane' appears in a smaller format than 'The Dying Detective' but is produced to the same high quality. The new publication has an introduction by Colin Dexter, the creator of Inspector Morse, and an afterword by Richard Lancelyn Green.

There are a number of new books of Doylean interest which we shall be reviewing in the new Journal:

Al Rodin and Jack Key's Conan Doyle's Tales of Medical Humanism and Values, published by Krieger, has recently been received. In essence the book is an annotated version of the stories of Round the Red Lamp but has a number of additional stories and features of interest.

Professor Harold Orel, whose Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Interviews and Recollections was published by Macmillan last year, has a new title, Critical Essays on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, just published by G.K. Hall of New York. At present there are no plans to publish this book in Britain and members may, therefore, be interested to learn that the Society has obtained permission from the publishers to reprint the book's introduction in ACD. There will also be a comprehensive review.

Oxford University Press has added a number of interesting titles to its list in recent months. The Oxford Book of Victorian Ghost Stories, The Oxford Book of Gothic Tales, and Victorian Tales of Mystery and Detection are particularly important collections which all contain stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. We shall be giving particular attention to these splendid volumes.

Gaslight Press has recently reprinted its collection of Conan Doyle's Strange Studies from Life and other narratives. We haven't looked at this volume before: look out for our review.

Gaslight has also recently announced two new titles: David S Payne's Myth and Modern Man in Sherlock Holmes, subtitled 'Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the uses of nostalgia', and Memories and Adventures a new edition containing all of the chapters from both previous editions, an introduction by Jon L Lellenberg, and a new, complete and detailed index. It has to be worth acquiring just for the index!

Rest assured, your Journal is in the course of production and will be very well worth waiting for. We are on target for an issue of some two hundred pages - which should see you through the dark nights of the coming winter.
