On 23 april 1904, The Daily Telegraph published an ad for Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary. The ad includes a quote from Arthur Conan Doyle about the dictionary :

"Sherlock Holmes" is baffled. Dr. A. Conan Doyle, the Author, says : « It has become quite a joke with us that we cannot trip up this dictionary. » (On new and unusual words.) « We have several times been sure that we would, but have always failed. »
