Aldershot District First Army Corps v. M.C.C.

The Sporting Life (29 june 1903, p. 7)

OVERWHELMING VICTORY FOR THE ARMY CORPS.

This annual two days' match was played on the splendid Club House ground at Aldershot on Friday and Saturday, in the presence of a large and distinguished company, very many ladies being present, whilst charming weather, and the music by the bands of the 18th Hussars and 2nd Royal Fusiliers tended to make the time pass away most pleasantly. On Friday, after the splendid innings of 428 by the home team, of which number Capt. Sykes contributed 130, with only one chance, and Major Hamilton 98 without a sign of one, there was no doubt as to the issue, but no one dreamt that the M.C.C., although not a very representative team, would sustain such a terrible defeat as they ultimately did. When the M.C.C. resumed batting they had five wickets down for little over half a century, Crake being not out and playing in good style. He was very poorly supported, however, and the innings finished for 170, of which he was responsible for 71.

Being 25 in a minority, the M.C.C. followed on after luncheon and fared even worse than in their first venture, all their wickets going down rapidly for the miserable total of 132 (29 by Rawlin being the top score). A great deal of the credit for the victory is due to Lieut. Mordaunt, who took altogether eleven wickets for 88 runs, whilst Private Black Raine quite distinguished himself in the second innings by getting five wickets for only 18 runs, so he is sure to be heard of again in Aldershot First Eleven Matches.
