The Divorce Law Reform Union, of which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is president, is looking forward to the publication of the Divorce Commission report, which is promised for early next month.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle explained to a Daily Mail representative yesterday that although he anticipated that the Royal Commission will be strongly in favour of the "common-sense proposals" which the union has advocated, there would be much work to be done before these could become law. Further, the union meant to press for those reforms which they thought necessary, and not merely for those recommended by the Commission.
"We are not extreme in our views," continued Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. "We want to make the two sexes equal in the matter of divorce. That is the main thing. Then it is not fair that there should be one law for the rich and another for the poor. I do not care much what court tries the cases so long as the procedure is cheap.
"We want lunacy where it is incurable to be a ground of divorce; penal servitude; and cruelty, physical and mental, where it is serious. Then there should be no such thing as separation. We would substitute divorce for separation in all cases."
