Eastbourne v. Eastbourne League Clubs

The Sporting Life (10 may 1897, p. 2)

In this match, which was played at the Saffron, Eastbourne, on Saturday, the League Clubs, who were allowed thirteen representatives, sustained a very crushing defeat. E. Noakes was top scorer for the defeated team with 37, the innings closing for 95. For Eastbourne, who compiled 257 for the loss of only four wickets, Joe Vine, the young professional who gave such a good account of himself when playing for Sussex last "back end," gave a fine batting display, just reaching his century before being neatly caught. His score included eleven 4's and seven 3's. A feature of the match was the extremely of bowling of Wheeler, the senior Eastbourne ground bowler, who got rid of ten of the League wickets at a cost of only 24 runs. Score:—
