Eastbourne v. Old Malvernians

The Sporting Life (27 august 1897, p. 4)

Interrupted by frequent showers during the opening stage, this two days' match was resumed under favourable conditions at the Saffrons, Eastbourne, yesterday. Even play marked the first innings on either side, but on the soft wicket only moderate scoring was found possible. H. J. Powys Keck for the visitors and Wheeler for the homesters did highly creditable service with the ball, each taking eight wickets, the former for 27 runs and the latter for 49. Going in a second time the Old Malvernians, with some spirited batting by Messrs. Latham and Lowe, knocked up 125 for two wickets; then, taking advantage of the closure rule, they put in the homesters, who were set the formidable task of scoring 148 in an hour. W. J. Ford and Joe Vine batted well, but at the call of time the side were 50 runs short of the required total, the match thus ending in a draw. Score:—
