This match was played on Thursday at the U.S. Recreation Ground, Portsmouth, in fine weather. The Rovers had the start in batting, and runs were quickly made. [[Arthur Conan Doyle|Dr. Conan Doyle]], who is staying in the town for six weeks after his trip to Egypt, joined partnership with Pillans, and showed some good cricket. Though he was disposed of before luncheon, 36 of the 71 shown upon the "telegraph " were registered against his name. The Rovers won by easily 296 runs for eight wickets (Pillans 66, Footner 62, Mercer 60) against their opponents' 70.
