Hants County XI v. Nineteen Young Players

The Hampshire Advertiser (3 september 1890, p. 3)

This match was commenced on Thursday at the College Ground, Winchester, the colts first going to the wickets to the bowling of Baldwin and Mr. Wood, who were in turn changed for Soar, Roberts, Dr. Doyle, and Mr. Lacey. There was no exceptionally brilliant batting on the part of any of the young players, but F. Holmes, J. W. Sheppard, G. A. Sparkes, and E. Newton undoubtedly showed the best form, the total of the innings reaching 78 only. In bowling Mr. Lacey was accredited with seven wickets for six runs only, Roberts with five for 17, Mr. Wood two for 11, and Baldwin five for 25. Assuming the defensive the county eleven (which was not strong) did not make much headway against some capital bowling on the part of the colts, F. Phillips, F. Holmes, Windebank, and Sheppard excelling in that department. When the play ceased nine wickets had fallen for precisely the same total as the young players, Roberts and Mr. B. J. B. Stephens carrying out their bats for 14 and 6 respectively. Resuming on Friday morning the not outs of the previous evening increased the total score to 110, when Roberts was bowled by Holmes for a hard hit 34, the amateur being not out 13. There was a decided improvement in the batting of Captain Lipscomb's team on a better wicket in their second essay, F. Read, Sparkes, Holmes, Cheater, and Newton wielding the willow most advantageously, the total score being 165. In this innings Baldwin was the most successful of the county bowlers, obtaining 11 wickets at a cost of 55 runs, Roberts being injured by a severe blow on the leg which incapacitated him. With a balance of 133 runs against them, and the time of play extended in order to conclude the match that night, the county eleven started on their second venture, and after the departure of Major Bethune runs were put on so freely by Mr. Lacey and Baldwin that 100 were scored under the hour, both batsmen at length succumbing to the excellent bowling of Phillips, who with Holmes would, probably, have saved the match had they been put on earlier. The match ended at about a quarter to 7 in a victory for the eleven by four wickets. Full score:—
