- He heard from Major Prendergast how Sherlock Holmes saved him in the Tankerville Club Scandal. (FIVE, 42)
- He is the son of Joseph Openshaw and nephew of Elias Openshaw. (FIVE, 62)
- Elias Openshaw took a fancy to him. (FIVE, 74)
- In 1878, Elias Openshaw asked to his brother Joseph Openshaw to let John live with him. When he was sober he used to be fond of playing backgammon and draughts with John. (FIVE, 75)
- Elias Openshaw would make John his representative both with the servants and with the tradespeople, so that by the time that he was sixteen he was quite master of the house. (FIVE, 77)
- He was found drown dead near the Waterloo Bridge. (FIVE, 383)
