My dear Kinross
I can't help writing to tell you how much I enjoyed Tony Hewitt. It is a really fine book. The war atmosphere is perfectly reproduced and the character drawing, especially Connie, is very good indeed. I hope it will have the reception it deserves but we live in an era of wretched critics who imagine always that if a thing is clear it must be shallow. The virtues of strong virile English are lost upon them and they turn the going idea to what is obscure and muddy. But surely such a book as this cannot escape them.
The Philosophy too is most helpful and, as I believe, true.
