Letter to Lady Tankerville (24 september 1925)

From The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia

This letter was written by Arthur Conan Doyle on 24 september 1925 from 15 Buckingham Palace Mansions (London) to Lady Leonora Tankerville, Countess of Tankerville (1868-1949), American spiritualist and wife of George Montagu Bennet, 7th Earl of Tankerville.

Letter

Dear Lady Tankerville

Excuse this intrusion. I was given a proof of your Ghost article with the request that I make a few comments upon it — which I did. May I congratulate you both upon your own remarkable psychic gifts and the grasp which you have of the subject. Especially I noted the idea, which I put forward some years ago, that the ghost figures are sometimes shells as it were peeled off in stress of emotion & not representing the real spirits at all.

I should like to draw your attention to the psychic Bookshop, established to get over the boycott of these subjects by Booksellers. The two books of Mrs. Tweedale, "Ghosts I have seen" & "Phantoms of the Dawn" are probably familiar to you

Yours faithfully

A Conan Doyle

Sept 24.
