On Saturday Lewes Priory were at home to the Sussex Martlets, and suffered defeat by 78 runs. The Priory batted first and started disastrously, Sturgeon being bowled with the first ball of the match. Five wickets were down for 54, but Barchard and Saunders then made a good stand and carried the total to 102 before Saunders was caught for 43. Barchard continued to bat well and carried out his bat for 31. The Martlets responded with 199, only three players failing to make double figures. For the winners Simms took eight wickets for 52 runs, Willcocks one for 43, and Corfe one for 5, while for the Priory Saunders got six for 58, Capt. King two for 33, and P. Cartwright two for 43.
