M.C.C. and Ground v. Wiltshire

The Sporting Life (17 august 1899, p. 4)

At the close of Wednesday's play in this match at Lord's Ground Wiltshire had completed an innings for the grand total of 460, and four of the M.C.C. had been disposed of for the meagre total of 31. Resuming play yesterday, Pougher (not out 1) was joined by Conan Doyle, and the total was taken to 42 for half the wickets when Pougher was bowled by Smith for 8. A. A. Somerville came next and stayed to make 10 before he was run out — six wickets for 57. A. J. Smith and Doyle added on 25, when the former was bowled by his namesake for 19. Seven wickets were now down for 82. F. E. Coming and Doyle now made a fair stand, and the score was taken to 138 before the latter was unfortunately run out for an admirably-played 34, and at the same total Cunning was bowled by Smith for 27, and with the addition of only 1 run the innings closed for 139, Smith accounting for seven wickets at a cost of but 41, five being clean bowled; the other three men were run out. Lunch time was now taken. Being 321 to the bad, M.C.C. followed on, A. J. Smith and C. L. Veal facing the attack of Smith and Smart. Runs came steadily until 30 appeared on the board, when Smith was howled by Smart for 15, his partner then having scored a like number. Two further wickets were quickly captured by Smart, both being bowled, Pougher without scoring, and H. H. Marriott only made 4. Rev. P. Hattersley-Smith followed, and by vigorous play soon hit up 15, when Smith found the way to his wicket, four wickets for 55. Conan Doyle came in next, but only scored 3 before being caught in the slips; the total was then 59 for five wickets. With an addition of 4 only, Veal was stumped for a carefully played 24, he having been one of the first in two more wickets quickly succumbed, and seven were down for 75. A capital stand was now made by C. W. Gooch and F. E. Cuming before the latter was bowled by Smith for 20. The total at the tall of the eighth wicket was 130. With an increase of only 2, Gooch was caught for an admirably-contributed innings of 34, Woodcock was last man in and started wite an on-drive for 3, Whiteside snicking the next ball of Smart's for alike number : soon after, however, Whiteside was bowled by Smart for 6, Woodcock carrying out his bat for 7, the innings closing for 147 after just two hours' play. Smart and Smith bowled all through the innings, with an exception of one over. Smart took six wickets for 85 runs, and Smith four for 52, the latter in course of the match securing in all eleven wickets for 93 runs. Scores and bowling analysis:—
