United Service C.C. v. Portsmouth C.C.

The Evening News (Portsmouth) (11 may 1885, p. 3)

This match was played at North-end, on Saturday, and was remarkable for the complete collapse of the Portsmouth batsmen, who appeared unable to make any show against the deliveries of Messrs. Andrews and Pinchin, who, in 21 overs — 15 of which were maidens — obtained the whole of the wickets in the first innings for the small score of 14, made up by 10 from the bat and four extras. For the Rivals Mr. Fielder played patiently and well on a very difficult wicket for 25, but when the last man was in unfortunately ran himself out. As will be seen by the full score, the Rivals won the match on the first innings by 43 runs, and had time permitted, it appears probable they would have scored a single innings victory. Mr. Hemingsley bowled very successfully for Portsmouth. Full score:—
